David C. Sibery, MHA
Consultant/Business Analyst
David Sibery is a consultant and business analyst for The Sibery Group, LLC (TSG). As a member of the team, David has been involved in organizational quality and operational improvement efforts and in hospital quality turnaround initiatives. David has experience working closely on quality and operational improvement efforts with Boards of Directors, physicians, senior management and staff.
His project development assignments have covered a variety of client needs such as the design of a compensation model for nurses and physicians, development of department level business plans, analysis of inventory turnover, analysis of catchment area demographics for physician practices, managing both clinical and non-clinical service lines, and structuring capital plans in CON level expansion projects. He has worked in a range of healthcare settings including community acute care hospitals, physician networks, healthcare suppliers, and healthcare systems.
David has a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. In an earlier career, he did public relations for the Minnesota Vikings and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Joseph K. Whiting, MBA, FACHE
Consultant/Operations
Joe Whiting is a consultant with The Sibery Group, LLC (TSG). Joe has been a hospital or health system executive for twenty years and has served as CEO and COO. He has overseen significant accomplishments in all dimensions of the hospitals and health systems where he has served. He has also had ten years of healthcare consulting experience.
As the Chief Executive Officer of Milford Memorial Hospital, a community hospital in Delaware, Joe led a turnaround process which resulted in a $1.6 million improvement in the bottom line in less than a year. Following the turnaround, Joe led the organization through a merger that resulted in the formation of the second largest health system in the state.
Joe also has demonstrated success in starting new products and services in hospitals, often involving highly complex clinical services. While serving as the Vice President at Glenbrook Hospital, part of the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare system, Joe led the development of an in vitro fertilization program which experienced high success rates and margins. Joe has also had significant experience and success in technology including leading the selection and installation of major applications such as order entry and results reporting.
Joe has worked to improve medical staff effectiveness including the creation of a hospital-based physician recruitment program, developing hospital-owned primary care practices and by establishing a 300 physician independent practice association.
In his work as a consultant Joe has worked with more than 50 hospitals and health systems since 2002. His engagements have included regulatory compliance services assisting client organizations improve their performance with Joint Commission accreditation. Joe has also established himself as a leader in the area of economics of infection prevention and in 2007 co-authored a white paper called “Dispelling the Myths: The True Cost of Infection Prevention”. He has been a frequent presenter at APIC national meetings, chapter meetings and state hospital association meetings.
Joe is the first External Director of the Board of Directors of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). He is a former member of the Delaware Hospital Association. Joe is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). Joe has authored articles and is a frequent presenter. Joe has a BA in History from Northwestern University and a Masters in Business Administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management.
Michael Curran, MHA
Consultant/Operations
Michael is a consultant for The Sibery Group, LLC. Michael specializes in hospital operations, utilizing his skills and extensive experience as a hospital administrator to effect improvements in financial and clinical performance and develop and execute hospital strategic plans. He is available to serve as a project- based consultant or in an interim-executive role.
Prior to working with The Sibery Group, Michael spent 10 years as a hospital executive in rural and urban facilities. He served as CEO at facilities in suburban Dallas and downtown Chicago, as well as a rural facility in Central Washington. Earlier in his career, Michael served as the COO for two hospitals in south west Florida.
Accomplishments garnered under his leadership include being named a Thompson 100 Top Hospitals facility, best-in-system patient and employee Gallup survey results, elimination of agency staffing in a competitive market, and significant financial improvement. Michael has developed a number of clinical service lines, including interventional cardiology/electrophysiology, orthopedic joint replacement, and interventional and diagnostic medical imaging. He has successfully worked with legislatures in several states to ensure fair and timely reimbursement, and in his most recent positions has served in a restructuring and turn-around role in challenged urban hospitals.
Michael holds a Master’s degree in Health Administration from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and is an Associate in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Daniel D. Park, MA
Consultant/Engineering Management
Daniel Park is a consultant for The Sibery Group, LLC. He has over 20 years of experience in operations and quality improvement in hospitals and health systems. He specializes in applying industrial and quality engineering principles to improve organizational performance.
Prior to working with The Sibery Group, Dan was the Director of Operations and Systems Engineering and Manager of Health Quality Metrics in a large suburban community health system in the Chicago area where he was instrumental in designing and implementing organizational performance dashboard, leading and facilitating performance improvement, redesigning complex processes and systems, and enabling major cost reduction initiatives.
Dan has also worked for one of the largest multi-hospital health systems in the metropolitan Chicago area in their internal consulting group specializing in operations and quality improvement. He has completed over 25 projects to improve patient care and ancillary and support services. He also provided planning, development, delivery and evaluation of consulting services to its system hospitals and business units.
Dan holds an undergraduate degree in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a Master’s degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL.
Rex E. Rudolph, CPA
Consultant/Operations
Rex Rudolph has over twenty years of experience in public accounting and physician practice management. He has managed a healthcare accounting and consulting practice, been an executive director and CFO for a physician management services organization, been the CFO for a 200-member physician IPA, and been the practice manager for a cardiac surgery group practice. Rex has conducted medical practice start-ups, medical group mergers, physician compensation and incentive plan evaluations, financial performance evaluations and benchmarking, revenue cycle reviews and enhancements, medical practice assessments, and other medical practice improvement initiatives. He has also managed a physician billing company providing billing services to a variety of medical specialties.
Rex has served as a contract practice manager for a variety of medical practices. He has been engaged to manage medical practice start-ups; hire and transition full-time practice managers; and provide on-going executive level management services.
Rex is a graduate of Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. He also holds a Masters of Accountancy from Ferris State University.
Karyn M. Bachar, BS
Office Manager
Upon completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Northern Illinois University in 2005, Karyn moved to Michigan and started as an Assistant Manager at a nation- wide women’s fashion retailer called Maurices. Within 6 months of employment, Karyn completed the management training program and was promoted to Store Manager. During her time as a Store Manager, Karyn successfully ran two stores at the same time for a period of 3 months, increased sales and profit in both the stores she managed, and helped train and coach other store managers, as well as their management team.
Karyn joined The Sibery Group, LLC (TSG) in October of 2007 as the Office Manager. In this capacity she handles all aspects of the office to include payroll, accounting, invoicing, personnel logistics, health insurance, expense reports, tracking of consultant hours, IT support and has organized and put in place systems to support the consultants and our clients.
Karyn has honed her project management skills both within the TSG offices as well as supporting our consultants and clients. She assists in the preparation of proposals, final reports and PowerPoint presentations for our clients.
In 2009, Karyn expanded the scope of her position and began utilizing her project management and organizational skills to serve clients in a consulting capacity. She has become familiar with the Peer Review and Policies and Procedures processes within healthcare organizations and has coordinated both functions at Norwegian American Hospital. Karyn has also been engaged at Roseland Community Hospital to assist in a special project for the Revenue Cycle Team.
Maricela Medina
Practice Consultant
Maricela Medina is a practice consultant for The Sibery Group, LLC (TSG). She is currently serving as the interim Director of Business Development at Norwegian American Hospital.
Maricela has extensive experience in billing and collections. She has designed coding and billing instruments to facilitate accurate, speedy reimbursement, assisted in the development of computerized data collections process, and managed third party and patient’s collection.
Maricela has served as an interim practice administrator at a urology physician practice. She has also overseen a hospital billing department in addition to providing process improvement tools.
Prior to working with TSG, Maricela served as a practice consultant at Rush University Medical Center. She was responsible for creating and implementing policies and procedures that would result in higher physician practice reimbursement. She also trained front and back office staff to ensure that all processes were followed.
She has over ten years of administrative and managerial experience within Edward Hospital and MacNeal Health Network among other physician organizations.
Sondra Pasztelan, CPC
Certified Coding Specialist
Sondra Pasztelan, CPC is a Certified Coding Specialist for The Sibery Group, LLC. She has 6 years of experience in coding and billing. Her primary responsibility is to ensure that all documentation is correct and meets all billing guidelines. She must make certain that all external regulations affecting the coding process are implemented in the work course to ensure compliance and consistency of coding.
Sondra is an experienced educator, auditor, and coder. Her coding expertise knows no specialty bounds, as she specializes in Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, OB Gyn, Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Pulmonary, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology and Cardiology. She is also well-versed in Medicare 1995-1997 Evalutation and Management Documentation Guidelines.
Sondra holds an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Medical Assisting, a Certificate of Completion as a Coding Specialist, and a Certificate of Completion as a Billing Specialist from Northwestern Business College. She is an accredited Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). This certification was achieved by passing a rigorus five hour test of procedural and diagnostic coding skills.
